Vol. 310 No. 9

Written Answers. - Energy Needs.

157.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he has seen a report (details supplied) that the Government has grossly overestimated the country's future energy needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen the press reports referred to by the Deputy. The difference between the estimates of future energy demands in the reports referred to and in the discussion document derive from different assumptions about the economic growth rate over the period to 1985.

I do not accept the assumptions on which the report is based. However, as I have already indicated I am always pleased to consider representations or submissions in relation to the energy situation in Ireland and the Deputy may rest assured that the views reported in these press reports will be borne in mind by the Government.
