Vol. 310 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin-Waterford Road Link.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will seek funds from the EEC Commission to provide a proper road link between Dublin and Waterford.

Finance towards meeting the cost of improvement of roads is available from two Community sources—the regional fund in respect of grant finance and the European Investment Bank in respect of loan finance. Both of these sources already have provided substantial funds towards meeting the cost of improvements on the Dublin-Waterford road and on other national roads. It is intended to continue to avail of EEC sources of financing both in regard to improvements on the Dublin-Waterford road and for the rest of the national road network.

Would the Minister give details of what money has been spent on this roadway?

That is a separate question.

Is the Minister aware that this is one of the most important and one of the most neglected roadways in the country? I put down the question because there are proposals before the Commission for the improvement of three other roadways to provincial centres, roadways which are in far better condition than the Dublin/Waterford link.

As the Deputy will appreciate, the question of the expenditure of moneys on roads and the priorities to be given is not a matter for me. The question the Deputy put was whether I would seek funds from the EEC Commission to improve the road link between Dublin and Waterford. As I have indicated, this has already been done and it is intended to continue doing this.

Would the Minister give details of the moneys already provided?

I suggest that the Deputy put down a separate question in that regard to some other Minister. It should not be directed to me.
