Vol. 310 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Shannon and Suck Rivers.

20.

asked the Minister for Finance if the drainage of the Shannon and Suck rivers is included in the EEC proposals for arterial drainage in the west of Ireland; if not why, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Shannon and its tributary, the Suck, are not included in the EEC proposals for financial aid for arterial drainage in the western region. The drainage of the Shannon Valley, which is a much bigger project, is being considered separately but I am not in a position to say what the outcome is likely to be.

When will there be a result, if at all?

The question relates to the drainage of the Shannon and with Government efforts since 1964. Is it not high time a decision was taken?

I can assure the Deputy that the two reports have been considered carefully. In a reply on 10 May last I informed the Deputy that I was exploring all avenues in regard to financial assistance for this project.
