Vol. 310 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay and Pension Increases.

31.

asked the Minister for the Public Service whether former civil servants, employees of semi-State bodies and local authorities receive pension rate increases simultaneously with salary and wage increases made to employees of these institutions.

The pensions of former civil servants and local authority employees are not increased simultaneously with the pay of serving employees but are increased on 1 July each year by reference to rates of pay in operation on that date. Any change in this arrangement is a matter for consideration by the Government in the context of the budget.

Increases in the pensions of former employees of semi-State bodies are a matter for the bodies concerned in the first instance. Where, however, the approval of any Minister is required in this regard—and this position obtains in most cases—the increases approved do not exceed those granted to retired civil servants.
