Vol. 310 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cattle Disease.

133.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if his enquiries into the incidence of enzootic bovine leucosis are yet complete; the number of cases located so far, the action taken in such cases; and if it is proposed to instigate an accelerated disease eradication programme in respect of the disease, in accordance with the relevant EEC Directive.

Testing of herds for enzootic bovine leucosis will be continued until I am satisfied that the disease, which so far has been found in only 48 animals in 10 herds containing imported Holstein cattle, has been eradicated. Infected animals are required to be slaughtered and movement of animals from an infected herd except for immediate slaughter is prohibited. I do not consider that our limited scale of infection warrants the introduction of an accelerated disease programme.
