Vol. 310 No. 9

Written Answers. - Rabies Risk.

134.

asked the Minister for Agriculture in view of the risk of an outbreak of rabies in this country, the practical steps he is taking to control the huge numbers of stray dogs and cats.

Stray dogs or cats do not present a risk of spreading rabies in this country for so long as the country remains free from the disease. There has been no outbreak of rabies here since 1903.

Stringent veterinary precautions are taken under my Department's statutory regulations to guard against the introduction and spread of rabies from abroad and if an outbreak should, unfortunately, occur here there is adequate legal provision to ensure the control of stray dogs and cats or other susceptible animals.
