Vol. 311 No. 7

Written Answers. - Ballycotton (County Cork) Coast Protection.

148.

asked the Minister for Finance if coast protection work will be carried out immediately at Ballycotton, County Cork, in view of the extensive storm damage within the past few months; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A preliminary engineering examination of coast protection proposals submitted by Cork County Council for the Ballycrenane-Garryvoe area of Ballycotton Bay has been completed and is being considered by the Commissioners of Public Works. If, however, the Deputy is referring to the area at Ballycotton village itself the position is that the council has not submitted any proposal for this area. In any event, due to the protracted procedures necessary under the Coast Protection Act, 1963, it would be a considerable time before works could be undertaken either at Ballycrenane-Garryvoe or the village itself, assuming that the circumstances when fully examined warrant a protection scheme as defined in the Act for either area.
