Vol. 313 No. 2

Written Answers. - Damage to Archaeological Sites.

184.

asked the Minister for Finance if any damage has been done to the sites at Aghafad, Lakill and Moortown in respect of which preservation orders have been made and the archaeological and historical significance of the sites in question.

The position in regard to the sites to which the Deputy refers is as follows:

Aghafad

Prior to making a preservation order many of the surface features of the site had been levelled and a stone cross had been moved.

The site is a monastic enclosure comprising a portion of the boundary rampart, the foundations of a structure which was possibly a church, and a stone cross.

Lakill and Moortown

One barrow had been completely destroyed and two small barrows had been greatly defaced before the preservation order was made.

The site now comprises six barrows.
