Vol. 313 No. 9

Suspension of Member.

I ask the Taoiseach to name Deputy Mitchell.

It is with regret that I do so. I hoped the Deputy would obey your rule but in deference to your request I name him. I move: "That Deputy Mitchell be suspended from the service of the Dáil".

Could you allow me to ask a question? In view of the fact that you did not ask the Deputy to leave the House if he was not prepared to sit down surely it is not in order to name him.

That is not necessary, in my judgment.

It is not your judgment but Standing Orders which rule things in the House.

I hope my suspension will serve to bring about a settlement of this dispute——

(Interruptions.)

It is not in order for the Deputy to make a statement after suspension has taken place.

The most unprovoked suspension I have seen in this House in the last ten years.

Deputy Mitchell withdrew from the Chamber.
