Vol. 313 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dundrum (Dublin) Post Office Site.

13.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider purchasing a site from a development which is currently being sold off in lots (details supplied), in order to provide an enlarged new post office for Dundrum and accommodation for Post Office vehicles.

(Dublin South-Central): The purchase of a site in Dundrum for the purposes stated is not contemplated.

Is the Minister not aware that the present post office, which serves an area larger than many towns in the constituency of the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, is grievously underserved by the tiny accommodation? Does he not agree that further extended accommodation is necessary?

(Dublin South-Central): My information is that there is not overcrowding in the sub-post office. It does happen occasionally when social welfare payments have to be made but only on such days. I would point out to the Deputy that all suburban post offices are sub-post offices. I think the Deputy has in mind that it should be a departmental office.

I have in mind that it should be a larger post office of whatever kind is deemed appropriate. I should not like to be in the shoes of the Minister of State in repeating those opinions in the main street of Dundrum.
