Vol. 315 No. 1

Written Answers. - Sudden Infant Death Study.

83.

asked the Minister for Health if a study has commenced on the recommendations of the Medico-Social Research Board in relation to sudden infant death; the amount of money allocated to the study; the terms of reference; when the study will be completed; if the results will be published; and the personnel involved.

The Medico-Social Research Board have commenced a pilot study to test the feasibility and methodology of a more comprehensive study of infant deaths, which would pay particular attention to sudden infant deaths. The pilot study commenced on 1 May and is expected to last for six months.

The cost of the pilot study is being absorbed in the general expenditure of the board. As its main purpose is to test the methodology of the larger study, it is unlikely that it will produce results relating to sudden infant deaths which would merit publication.

The study is being conducted by a member of the medical staff of the Medico-Social Research Board under the general direction of the director of the board.
