Vol. 315 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School Closure.

23.

asked the Minister for Education the reasons for the proposed closure of St. Andrews national school, South Circular Road, Dublin, and if he will allow the school to continue in existence for a further three years on an inter-denominational basis.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 22 of 22 May 1979. The position at present is, I understand, that representatives of the parents concerned are in negotiation with the patron of the school.

Is the Minister aware of the position of the St. Andrew's National School Parents Committee in keeping this school viable for the coming years? In the context of the school being a small school and in the context of favouring inter-denominational education where there is an expressed wish for it, would the Minister not agree that he should take an active part in ensuring the continuation of the school? I admit that the Methodist trustees have a financial problem. Would the Minister take that into account and come to what may be a new approach for the continuance of this school on a multi-denominational basis?

I allowed Deputy Collins to get the answer to Question No. 23. Question Time is now over. The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for the next sitting day.
