asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport in relation to the Coast Life-Saving Service: (i) the amount of money provided for the service in each of the last five years; (ii) the number of centres or locations at which the service is operational, and their addresses; (iii) the number of volunteers and/or paid personnel on call at each centre or location; (iv) the number of courses for volunteers held in the current year, with details of the location, duration of course, and number of volunteers who attended each such course; (v) the amount paid to each such volunteer for attendance at such a course, and the date on which the rate of payment for such a course was last revised; (vi) the amount of money spent on new equipment for the service in each of the past five years; (vii) the nature of the transport available for equipment and volunteers at each of the centres or locations specified in (ii); and (viii) whether each centre or location has a standard issue of equipment, and if he will itemise the major items in any such list of basic equipment.

(1) The amount of money provided for the Coast Life-Saving Service in each of the years 1975 to 1979 was as follows:

(4) Coast Life-Saving Service companies are normally exercised in the use of the apparatus once in each quarter, except the cliff ladder stations at Toe Head, Seven Heads and Mizen Head, where exercises are held half-yearly. The table below sets out the exercise carried out in the current year. Because of temporary difficulties it has not yet been possible to hold exercises at a small number of stations.

(5) The amount for attendance at exercises is as follows: No. 1 man: £2. Other Volunteers: £1.75. Assistants: £0.88.

In addition the following prizes are paid: Signalling: £3.50. Throwing the heaving line cane: £0.88.

These rates are effective since 1 January, 1973.

(7) Wagons are used for the transport of the life-saving apparatus. These can be adapted for haulage over rough terrain by tractor. If apparatus has to be conveyed by road for any distance, lorries or trailers are used with cars or minibuses for personnel.

(8) Each station has a standard issue of equipment. Fifty-one of the stations are equipped to carry out rescue by rocket-line/breeches buoy. The major items at these stations are the life-saving apparatus itself, comprising launching machine, rescue rockets, hawser and tackle and breeches buoy. Three stations are equipped with cliff ladders only.
