Vol. 316 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Fares and Charges.

11.

andMr. Deasy asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if the statement contained in paragraph 4.1 of the 1972 Occasional Paper of the National Prices Commission that CIE fares and charges have risen by more than any of the following in the previous years: (a) the general price level, (b) the costs of alternative forms of transport. (c) the earnings of either transport workers or industrial workers in general and (d) the prices of public transport in Britain, is also true of the subsequent seven years 1972 to 1979.

The conclusions contained in paragraph 4.1 of Occasional Paper No. 4 of the National Prices Commission derived from a preliminary study by the commission who had enlisted expert help for an analysis and evaluation of a CIE application for an increase in fares and rates submitted in 1972. In the occasional paper the commission said that the conclusions from the preliminary study were necessarily tentative. As far as I am aware, no similar study has been undertaken in respect of the years 1972 to 1979.
