Vol. 316 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Squad Cars.

21.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of squad cars operating in Limerick city; the number operating from Henry Street Garda Station, Edward Street Garda Station, Mary Street Garda Station and Mayorstone Garda Station in Limerick.

The total number of patrol cars, including detective unit cars, allocated to stations in Limerick city is 15 and they are allocated between the four city stations as follows: Henry Street, 11; Edward Street, 3; Mary Street, 1; Mayorstone, Nil.

Has the Minister any intention of increasing the number of squad cars in Limerick City? This number of 15 is totally inadequate to service a city the size of Limerick.

It is not I, it is the Garda Commissioner who determines the requirements of the Garda as far as transport or any other service is concerned. It is he and he alone who determines what has to be put in there, not Deputy Lipper or I.

I would question the Commissioner's judgement if he said that 15 cars are sufficient for Limerick city.

If we can get a few taxi licenses there is no shortage of transport.
