Vol. 316 No. 11

Written Answers. - Household Electrical Appliances Consumption.

341.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy when he proposes to implement the decision of 15 May 1979 by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers requiring domestic appliances to show bright orange labels giving details of electricity consumption in kilowatts and if he will extend this requirement to include space heating and water heating appliances.

It is assumed that this question relates to the directives adopted by the Council of the European Communities on 14 May 1979 on the indication by labelling of the energy consumption of household appliances. Under the provisions of the directives member states are required to bring into force the provisions necessary to comply with the directives within a period of two years and it is my intention to comply with that requirement.

The provisions of the directives have not yet been applied to space heating and water heating appliances. The question of extending the provisions to these appliances will be considered if and when the necessary implementing directives are adopted by the European Communities.
