Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Location of Communications Bodies.

257.

Mr. Walsh

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will locate the two bodies, to operate the postal and telecommunications area, outside of Dublin.

It is assumed that the question relates to the interim boards, An Bord Poist and An Bord Telecom, recently appointed for the postal and telecommunications services respectively. Subject to whatever may be contained in the enabling legislation, the boards will be free to choose the locations of their headquarters.

It may be of interest to the Deputy to know that, in the case of the telecommunications service, approximately 50 per cent of subscribers are located in the 01 area, mainly Dublin and 50 per cent of revenue is generated there; in the case of the postal service approximately 50 per cent of total postings in the State and of mail revenue are generated in the Dublin Postal District and about 75 per cent of all mail handled in the State is processed there.
