Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Stray Animals.

332.

asked the Minister for Justice the cost of keeping a stray animal (a) overnight, and (b) for a longer period, in a local authority pound.

Naturally the cost varies according to the animal concerned. My function in this regard is to prescribe fees to be paid by the owners of impounded animals and chattels. The fees are revised from time to time by regulations. The current regulations, the Pounds (Amendment) Regulations, 1977 (S.I. No. 349 of 1977), are likely to be revised in the near future. In determining the fees account is taken of the relevant cost factors involved, that is, the level of wages and the cost of animal foodstuffs.

The regulations set out the fees payable for each period of 24 hours, or part of such period, during which an animal is impounded.
