Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Student Exchanges.

41.

asked the Minister for Education if he will include, as an integral part of the educational curriculum in primary and secondary schools, student exchanges between rural and urban areas, if such an innovation would be educationally advantageous and the proposals, if any, in this connection.

There are no proposals before my Department from teacher or school management bodies to introduce a scheme of student exchanges for primary school pupils between rural and urban areas.

There is no evidence that there is need for such a scheme and that there would be any significant educational advantage for children of primary school age.

So far as secondary schools are concerned, the question of any such exchange would be primarily a matter for individual school managements, subject to compliance with my Department's Rules for Secondary Schools. Provision is already made in the secondary schools' programme for suitable emphasis on both rural and urban culture.
