Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - Corporal Punishment.

55.

asked the Minister for Education the parents' organisations he has consulted on the question of corporal punishment in schools and if, as a result of the inquiries he has made to date, he now intends to ban corporal punishment in all schools and if he will make a statement on the matter.

56.

asked the Minister for Education when he proposes to take an initiative on the question of corporal punishment in schools.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 55 and 56 together.

I would refer the Deputies to my reply to Questions Nos. 24, 25 and 26 in December 1978 in which I referred to the organisations from which I had received views on the use of corporal punishment in schools. I also set out in that reply the views expressed by each organisation.

Some of the organisations indicated that they would be forwarding further views in due course.

The views already expressed, and the additional observations to be received, will be carefully considered in my Department prior to a decision being taken by me in relation to this matter with due regard to all relevant considerations.
