Vol. 318 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Micro-Processor Employment Effects.

7.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if a study on the introduction of micro-processor technology and its likely effects on public service employment has been carried out by his Department or any other body, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Department of the Public Service have been monitoring this question for some time past, and are aware of the latest international developments and the technology involved. While the future evolution of microprocessor-based office equipment can be foreseen with some clarity, the foremost international experts hold widely differing views on the likely impact on employment levels.

The Government recently established a review body to examine the organisation of computer services in the public service. One of the terms of reference of this body is to estimate and comment on the likely effects of computerisation, including office automation, on future employment levels in government services.

I understand that the National Board for Science and Technology have launched a study on the question of the impact of microelectronics on employment in the economy in general. Since this will include the public service, my Department will maintain liaison with the board on this question.

When was this body set up? How many personnel are involved? When does the Minister expect a report from the group on the impact of microtechnology on the employment levels in the public service?

The body was established following a Government decision on 18 December 1979. The inaugural meeting was held on 26 February 1980 and I cannot tell the Deputy when the body will report.

How many people are involved in the study?

I do not have that information but I will find out and pass it on to the Deputy.
