Vol. 318 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dublin Aged Population.

271.

asked the Minister for Health the number of persons over the age of 65 in the Dublin city and county areas and the projected areas and the projected figures for the next ten years.

There were 72,036 persons aged 65 years and over in Dublin County Borough, Dún Laoghaire and the remainder of Dublin County at the time of the 1971 Census of Population. This is the latest year for which an accurate figure is available.

It has been estimated in my Department for purposes of planning health services that this figure has since increased to about 83,000 persons and the projected figures for 1986 and 1991 are 92,000 and 97,000 respectively. These estimates are based on the 1971 Census of Population and may need some revision when an age break-down of the population becomes available from the 1979 Census of Population.
