Vol. 318 No. 10

Written Answers. - Use of Frozen Foods.

225.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Tourism if his attention has been drawn to the substantial portion of the frozen foods including chips and vegetables used in hotels, restaurants and catering establishments which are imported; the reason the State is unable to supply this particular market and the steps being taken to reduce our dependence on imports in this region.

: I am aware that a large amount of frozen foods, including frozen vegetables, is being imported for use by hotels and the catering trade. The lack of suitable Irish raw materials in sufficient quantities at competitive prices for processing here and strong import competition are major factors adversely affecting the development of the Irish frozen food sector.

The Industrial Development Authority are actively encouraging the establishment of new projects and the expansion of existing firms in this area with a view to reducing imports and expanding exports. The Irish Goods Council are also conducting a very active campaign aimed at increasing the level of Irish foodstuffs purchased.
