Vol. 319 No. 6

Written Answers. - Donegal Town Sewerage Scheme.

61.

asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding the new sewerage system for Donegal town, and if his attention has been drawn to the proposal for the discharge of raw sewage into the bay.

An advance section of the Donegal main drainage scheme is being carried out by direct labour to serve new industrial development at Lurganboy, housing and a new vocational school. The sewage effluent from the advance section will be discharged through a temporary septic tank into the estuary.

The Stage 1 scheme includes provision for discharge of the sewage effluent from a tidal holding tank on the outflowing tide through a sea outfall with diffuser following comminution. I am advised that the volume of water available in the estuary is adequate to dilute the effluent to acceptable levels so that no pollution should arise. I understand that Donegal County Council propose to submit revised contract documents for the remainder of Stage 1 of the Donegal main drainage.
