Vol. 320 No. 2

Local Government (Superannuation) (No. 2) Bill, 1979 [Seanad]: Motion to Discharge Order for Committee Stage.

I move: "That the Order for the Committee Stage on Tuesday next be discharged and that the Committee Stage be taken today."

(Cavan-Monaghan): I have no objection to the order being discharged. However, I do not think it desirable when the Committee Stage of a Bill is agreed to be taken on a specific date at the conclusion of Second Stage that it should be altered to another day without notice. The Committee Stage of this Bill was specifically agreed for next week and I think the record shows that. I submit it should be taken next week.

As far as I know the Whips agreed to this. I do not know any more.

It was mentioned on the Order of Business today.

(Cavan-Monaghan): I know it was mentioned on the Order of Business. I do not want to make a mountain out of what in the particular circumstances here is a molehill. The fact is that the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Deputy Fahey, agreed that the Committee Stage would be taken next week and the record shows that. Now the Government, without notice to anybody, have ordered Committee Stage for this week. It may have been mentioned at the meeting of the Whips but it was not mentioned when Deputy Fahey and I agreed to taking the Bill next week.

It was agreed by the Whips.

At any rate it is agreed now.

Question put and agreed to.
