(Cavan-Monaghan) asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the flooding caused by the River Erne in County Cavan, the present position regarding the drainage of this river and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the need for improvement of the drainage of the Erne river in County Cavan.
A survey of the portion of the Erne catchment situated entirely within the State was carried out between 1958 and 1961. However, the scheme was not proceeded with as it was considered uneconomic at that time. Further consideration is now being given to the design of a scheme for the area but at this stage I cannot say if or when such a scheme might proceed.
