Vol. 321 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

20.

asked the Minister for Education if he will approve the appointment of a remedial teacher at the Convent of Mercy, Rosscarbery, County Cork.

Last month, by circular letter, I announced to management authorities of post-primary schools that I was prepared to consider applications in certain circumstances for the provision of a post, additional to the normal allocation of teachers, in the specific area of remedial education. Schools wishing to be considered for such posts were asked to submit applications not later than Friday 9 May 1980.

An application from the Convent of Mercy, Rosscarbery, has been received in my Department and will receive due consideration in conjunction with all other applications received in response to the circular letter.

Is the Minister considering authorising an appointment to an area like Rosscarbery, taking into account the exceptional circumstances of the school? This is an area without a vocational school.

I think this is a magnificent school. It is multi-faceted.

Is the Minister aware of the unique circumstances there?

Very much so.

Can I take it that the Minister will respond favourably to the application?

I am adhering to the terms of my reply.
