Written Answers. - Archaeological Excavations.
The amount of State funds allocated to each archaeological excavation in respect of which all the objects found have not yet been reported to the National Museum in accordance with section 23 of the National Monuments Act, 1930, is as follows:
Site |
Amount Allocated |
Youghal Town Walls, County Cork |
£3,150 |
Sullivans Quay, Cork City, Post-Medieval site |
£6,000 |
421.
andMr. Griffin asked the Minister for Finance if archaeological excavations carried out by or on behalf of the National Museum require an excavation licence from him.
A licence to excavate is normally required under section 26 (1) of the National Monuments Act, 1930, for archaeological excavations carried out by or on behalf of the National Museum. However, section 18 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1954, modifies section 26 of the Principal Act in that it provides for an unlicensed excavation to take place to secure the safety of a monument or where a monument or archaeological object is in imminent danger of destruction or decay.
