Vol. 323 No. 3

Written Answers . - Telephone Kiosks .

444.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has changed departmental regulations whereby telephone kiosks can be placed in rural areas other than outside sub-post offices; and, if so, if he will outline the conditions laid down to qualify for the provision of such kiosks.

: The answer is yes. Telephone kiosks are now provided in rural areas where there is no post office but where the use likely to be made of a kiosk would justify the provision of one. In deciding whether provision of a kiosk is warranted in a particular rural area account is taken of social and demographic factors such as the number of houses in the catchment area, the distance from existing public telephone facilities, the density of private telephones in the area, location of churches and schools in the area and so on.

445.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will list the post offices in County Mayo not yet supplied with telephone kiosks; and when he expects that these essential facilities will be provided.

: The following are the offices: Ballysakeery, Ballina; Binghamstown, Ballina; Boughadoon, Ballina; Broadhaven, Ballina; Callow, Ballina; Carrowniskey, Westport; Clare Island, Westport; Clogher, Ballina; Clogher, Claremorris; Cregganbaun, Westport; Dooleeg, Ballina; Drummin, Westport; Finny, Claremorris; Keenaghbeg, Ballina; Killour, Claremorris; Killsallagh, Westport; Manulla, Castlebar; Murrisk, Westport; Pulathomas, Ballina; Roonah Point, Westport; Srah, Claremorris; Tulrahan, Claremorris; Ummoon, Ballina.

There is a public call office in each of these post offices, the use made of the public call office facilities at these offices has not been such as to justify the provision of a kiosk. However, my Department are at present drawing up a programme to erect telephone kiosks at a number of centres where their provision was not regarded as warranted heretofore. This will include at least some post offices which at present do not have this facility.

As, however, there are about 300 such offices, it is not possible to say at what centres they will be provided or when this will be done at an individual office.
