Vol. 323 No. 3

Written Answers . - Dublin Sewage Discharge .

453.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the serious overloaded position of sewage as it is discharged into the sea adjacent to the Old Salthill Hotel, Monkstown, Dublin; and if he will provide funds to Dún Laoghaire Corporation to have the necessary remedial work undertaken.

The present means of disposal of sewage in Dún Laoghaire is by means of a tidal tank discharging undersea through a long outfall pipe. Problems of overloading have occurred at a pumphouse which lifts portion of the sewage to the tidal tank, with resulting discharges to the bay. In order to prevent overflows it is necessary to raise the pumpchamber and re-position the electrical controls.

Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation submitted proposals to my Department providing for the execution of these remedial works at an estimated cost of £15,000. I approved an allocation for the full cost under the 1980 small schemes programme.

I understand that the corporation have commenced remedial work at the temporary pumping station.
