Vol. 323 No. 3

Written Answers . - Enforcement of Traffic Lights Laws .

344.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the serious problem affecting the traffic lights at the junction of Sandford Road and Marlborough Road, Dublin 6, and the number of consistent offenders who break the lights; if, in view of the large number of school children who pass through this busy intersection in the morning and in the afternoon and of the failure of private action undertaken by parents to have the law enforced, he is prepared to ensure that a Garda on motorcylce duty will be made available for five days a week from 8.30 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. in order to enforce the Road Traffic Acts; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: I have been informed by the Garda authorities that a representative of the parents of the school children in question has discussed this matter with the local Garda. It appears that the traffic lights at the junction are so regulated that the time allowed for pedestrians to cross is not sufficient. Prior to the erection of the lights a school warden was employed but his services were dispensed with on the erection of the lights. The representative of the parents was advised to seek the services of a school warden and an adjustment of the lights in favour of the pedestrain. The Garda have also brought the question of the lights to the notice of Dublin Corporation. In recent weeks a garda has been on duty at the junction practically every day during the morning and afternoon and breaches of the Road Traffic Acts have been detected. There are many commitments on the members in this district but every effort will be made to continue this arrangement as long as it is necessary. The location is at present under examination by Garda traffic officers in consultation with technical officers from Dublin Corporation.
