asked the Minister for Justice if he will give the following information in respect of the aircraft and helicopters referred to in his interview on RTE radio on 5 September 1980; (i) the number and type of equipment being considered, (ii) the estimated cost involved, (iii) the estimated time scale and (iv) if any finance will be made available in the coming year.

: I presume that the Deputy is referring to my announcement to the media on 4 September of the Government's approval of a plan by the Garda Commissioner to deal with serious violent crime.
The selection of aircraft and helicopters to suit the particular needs of the Garda Síochána is being examined as a matter of urgency. Pending the completion of this examination it is not possible at present to specify the types, estimated cost or the time scale in relation to such equipment.
It has already been indicated on behalf of the Government that whatever moneys are needed to finance the Commissioner's plan will be made available.
