Vol. 323 No. 3

Written Answers . - County Dublin Detention Centre .

393.

asked the Minister or Education if he is aware that the new detention complex at Oberstown, Lusk, County Dublin, is intended to cater for 30 boys only; and, if so, what gurantees an he give that there will be no over-crowding or any extension of the facilities in the future.

: As recommended by the Task Force on Child Care Services, accommodation is being provided in the special school for 30 boys in three residential units, each for ten pupils. The school as planned will adequately cater for this number. There is no question of providing additional facilities in this centre.

394.

asked the Minister for Education the facilities which will be allowed or the arrangements which will be made for persons visiting the boys in the proposed detention centre at Lusk, County Dublin, in view of the fact that the centre will be two miles from the nearest main road, three miles form Lusk village and that the bus service on that road is infrequent.

: As in the existing Scoil Ard Mhuire, every effort will be made to enable the parents to keep in touch with their children and to involve them positively in the process of rehabilitation. Free transport will be made available to the parents at regular intervals and appropriate transport arrangements will be made by the board of management.
