asked the Minister for Education the name and location of each home for deprived children in the country; the number of children in each home; the number of teachers in each home; and the funds allocated to each home in 1979 and 1980.
Written Answers . - Deprived Children .
: There are 52 residential homes and residential schools for socially deprived and delinquent children. These homese and schools may be classifed in the following way:
(a) Four special schools which have been certified by the Minister for Educations as either reformatory or individual schools under section 45 of the Children Act, 1908.
(b) 25 residential homes which have been certified by the Minister for Education as industrial schools under the Children Act, 1980. In accordance with the recommendations of the Kennedy Committee, the majority of the children in these homes attend local schools. Only two homes, Goldenbridege and Rathdrum, have schools attached. There other homes, High Park, Dublin, Sunday's Well, Cork and Mayfield, Waterford, have training centres for teenage girls attached, with services of part-time teachers.
(c) 19 residential homes approved by the Minister for Health under section 55 of the Health Act, 1953.
A list of the schools/homes specified at (a) (b) and (c) above showing the numbers of children resident and the numbers of teachers employed is attached.
The special schools at Lusk, Finglas and Clonmel are financed on a budget system. The amounts allocated to the three schools from departmental funds for remuneration fo non-teaching staff, maintenance of boys and other expenses in 1979 and 1980 were as follows:

The special school at Kilmacud and all the residential homes are funded by capitation grant. Payment of this grant is shared between the Departments of Education and Health and the local authority of the area in which the child resides. The rates of grant during 1979-80 were:

£38.50 per child per week with effect from 1-3-1979
£41.00 per child per week with effect from 1-6-1979
£46.50 per child per week with effect from 1-3-1980
