Vol. 324 No. 4

Written Answers. - Agricultural Grants.

174.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the abolition of the agricultural grant for farmers over £40 PLV means that farmers so affected in County Mayo now pay the highest rates in Ireland being £17.46 in the £PLV as against a national average of £12.10; and if, in view of the fact that this area is a recognised disadvantaged area under EEC regulations he will either (i) restore the agricultural grant forthwith or (ii) introduce a more equitable system of assessment thus creating a more favourable climate for western farmers to maintain their present progress and expansion programmes.

175.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give an assurance on the retention of the agricultural grant for those farmers whose valuation exceeds £20 PLV.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 174 and 175 together.

I am aware that rate poundage levels vary throughout the country. I have no proposals to reduce the present level for allowances under the Rates on Agricultural Land (Relief) Act, 1980. In fact, rated occupiers of land holdings with valuations between £40 and £60 will have a remission of the second moiety of the current year's rates.
