Vol. 324 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation for Physically Disabled.

6.

asked the Minister for Health whether there are any physically disabled patients, who are not psychiatrically ill, accommodated at present in psychiatric institutions due to lack of suitable alternative bed places.

Inquiries from health boards have ascertained that there are no physically disabled persons, who are not psychiatrically ill, at present in psychiatric institutions.

Does the Minister's reply relate only to health board operated institutions or to all institutions in health board administrative areas?

I will check that and communicate with the Deputy. The answer refers to health boards.

Is the Minister aware that a serious allegation was made by a spokesman on behalf of one of the groups representing disabled persons that such a situation obtained? Is the Minister aware that that is the reason why the Minister is being asked this question? The Minister should be able to answer it.

I have given the answer. I have inquired from the health boards and they have told me that there are no physically disabled persons, who are not psychiatrically ill, at present in psychiatric institutions. The Deputy has raised a further point in clarification and I will communicate with him about that matter later.
