Vol. 324 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sporting Injuries.

346.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the increasing risk from sporting injuries, he will recommend that compulsory insurance should obtain in schools and colleges etc. to safeguard young people and to help defray the costs incurred by such injuries.

I understand that, where negligence on the part of a school authority may be proved in the case of injury arising out of sporting activities, a claim for damages would be sustainable against the appropriate school authority. However, most cases of sporting injuries are purely accidental and there is no negligence on the part of the school authority. It is, of course, open to parents of pupils to take out personal insurance cover against the risks involved in participation in sporting activities.
