asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of students who entered universities through the central applications office in the academic year 1980-81, or the latest year for which figures are available: (a) the total number of entrants, (b) the number of students who had (i) two honours or equivalent, (ii) three honours or equivalent, (iii) four honours or equivalent and (iv) more than four honours or equivalent, and (c) the percentage of students who gained a higher education grant.

The total number of students who entered universities in the academic year 1979-80, the latest year for which information is available, was 5,797. The Central Applications Office does not abstract from its records the numbers of students with various levels of attainment at the Leaving Certificate examination.

Approximately 19 per cent of students who entered universities in 1979-80 were awarded a higher education grant.
