Vol. 328 No. 8

Written Answers. - Surplus State Vehicles.

65.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the distinctive colours of surplus State vehicles such as Post Office vans and so on, are changed on disposal; and, if not, whether he considers that this is wise, from the point of view of security, considering the misuse that could be made of such vehicles by persons with criminal intent.

The Office of Public Works are concerned only with the disposal of surplus or obsolete vehicles which are the property of the Commissioners of Public Works. Each Department are individually responsible for the arrangements for disposal of their own vehicles.

In disposing of surplus vehicles the Office of Public Works ensure that alinsignia indicating its ownership are obliterated. The commissioners do not consider that the distinctive colouring or their vehicles constitutes any threat to security and consider, therefore, that the cost of changing the colours before disposal would not be justified.

The Stationery Office, Valuation Office and Ordnance Survey Office purchase and dispose of their vehicles through Post Office stores who are under the control of the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs.
