Vol. 330 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Refuse Disposal

1.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for the Environment if he will undertake to examine the possibility of replacing the Limerick city dump at Moyross with an incinerator and include this study in his Department's general examination of the possibility of converting domestic refuse to energy.

Any proposals for the provision of an incinerator to replace a refuse tip would be a matter in the first instance for the local authority concerned — in this case Limerick Corporation. Account would have to be taken of course of all the relevant considerations including the capital and operating costs and the general viability of such a project, bearing in mind the volumes and types of waste available.

As regards the latter part of the Deputy's question, my Department are not at present carrying out any general examination of the kind referred to. The Department of Energy, however, keep under review the possibility of using waste, including domestic waste, as an emergy source and my Department maintain contact with that Department in the matter.

(Limerick East): I placed this question with the Minister for Energy in the first instance. Following on the second part of the Minister's reply, could he refer the question to the Department of Energy?

I will be glad to do that if possible. I will discuss the matter with the Deputy. It is probably a matter of putting down a question.
