Vol. 330 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Fluoridation.

26.

asked the Minister for Health the number of occasions since the introduction of the compulsory fluoridation of water supplies that the content of fluoride in the water was found to exceed one part per million.

The information requested is not available in my Department. Each fluoridated water supply is required to be tested at least once monthly by the health board concerned in order to determine the level of fluorine and to enable remedial action to be taken if this is above or below prescribed levels. Some 160 supplies have been fluoridated since the measure commenced in 1964. In that time my Department has had no reports of instances where levels found to be in excess of one part per million gave rise for concern. In the circumstances it is not proposed to devote the time and expense which would be necessary to compile the information requested in the question.
