Vol. 330 No. 10

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

583.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the action he proposes to take to deal with the unsatisfactory service being experienced by telephone subscribers in the Rathcoole and Saggart areas of County Dublin.

I regret that in some respects the service in Rathcoole and Saggart is unsatisfactory. The most pressing problems are difficulties in making calls to and from the Naas (045) areas and delays in fault repairs and maintenance of overhead cable routes and I presume that it is these the Deputy has in mind. A new exchange complex at Naas will come into service shortly and a gradual improvement in the service will ensue.

A special programme of preventive maintenance is in hands for the entire 01 area. The difficulties in the Rathcoole and Saggart areas will have particular attention as part of this work.

584.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the need to erect a telephone kiosk at Kilmoroney, Athy and Clonagh, Ballickmoyler, County Laois; and when the service will be provided under the guarantee given by Laois County Council.

Yes; it is expected that the kiosks will be provided early in 1982.

585.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when an applicant (details supplied) in County Wicklow will receive a telephone service.

It is unlikely that it will be possible to provide service for this applicant for at least a year.

586.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give a detailed report on the number of applicants awaiting telephone service in Bray, County Wicklow; the progress made to date in respect of the completion of cabling; the capacity available for further applicants after the present number of applications have been met by existing and two mobile exchanges and the situation in relation to the construction of a permanent telephone exchange.

There are 465 applications awaiting attention at Bray. The necessary cabling to enable these applications to be met will be carried out progressively over the next two years or so and it is expected that a majority of the applications will be met within the next year with the remainder being met progressively over the following year or so.

The Office of Public Works will be seeking tenders early next year for the building of an extension to the existing permanent exchange at Bray. Additional equipment in the extended permanent exchange is expected to be ready for service about the end of 1983 or early in 1984.

There is sufficient capacity in the existing exchange and two mobile exchanges for the waiting applications plus expected demand during the next 12 months or more. The question of providing a third mobile exchange to bridge the gap until the extended permanent exchange is in service is under consideration.
