Vol. 331 No. 11

Written Answers. - Industrialisation Projects.

646.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the future plans the IDA have for the industrialisation of (a) Castletownbere and (b) the Beara Peninsula generally; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that during the past 18 months, the Industrial Development Authority approved grant assistance for five industrial projects for the Beara Peninsula, four of which are located in Castletownbere. These projects at present employ a total of 47 people and they have the potential to employ approximately 200 people at full production.

In addition, land on Dinish Island owned by Bord Iascaigh Mhara, is available to the IDA for industrial development. The IDA will continue to promote this area for new industrial projects.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the future plans the IDA have for the industrialisation of Dunmanway, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority are at present acquiring a 16 acre site in Dunmanway, County Cork, which will be promoted for suitable industrial projects.

648.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will outline in detail the proposals for industrial units to be sited in the north Dublin inner city; when work will commence; the amount of investment by the IDA; and the discussions, if any, that have taken place with commercial interests to ensure local employment.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that they are implementing an extensive programme of industrial development in the inner city area of Dublin. In the north inner city, the IDA have acquired five acres of land at two locations and are currently finalising negotiations for the purchase of a further ten acre site in the port area. Over 29 individual factory units totalling about 200,000 sq. ft. have been completed or are under construction at present on these sites. The IDA estimates that these units have the capability to house projects which could provide a total of 800 jobs at full production.

The total cost of IDA investment in the north inner city amounts to £5.6 million. Whilst recruitment of staff in assisted projects is the responsibility of the promoter, the authority will nevertheless seek to maximise the level of local employment in inner city projects.
