Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas.

227.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is his intention to review the manner in which seriously disadvantaged areas are assessed; and, if so, when we may expect such a review to commence.

228.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the progress, if any, that he has made since July 1981 to extend the disadvantaged areas scheme in County Limerick.

Question No. 229 postponed.

230.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the progress, if any, that has been made in the past three months in relation to the extension of the disadvantaged areas and the inclusion of the Macamore area in County Wexford.

231.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when the Nire Valley area, County Tipperary, will be classified as a disadvantaged area.

232.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will initiate fresh discussions with a view to having all lands in the constituency of Kerry South designated as severely handicapped areas, as the existing non-designated townlands are poor quality farm land and have a low agricultural population.

233.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware of the need to have the Slieve Bloom area of County Laois with particular reference to the townlands of Killanure, Camross and adjoining townlands designated under the disadvantaged areas scheme in accordance with the submission to his Department by Laois County Committee of Agriculture; and if he will make an application to the EEC for special recognition for this area and the remaining areas of County Laois not included in the present limited scheme as the farmers there have a declining farm income.

234.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the steps he has taken to include Counties Cavan and Monaghan in the severely disadvantaged areas for the purpose of EEC grants.

235.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if further discussions are taking place with the EEC for an extension of the severely handicapped areas scheme; and, if so, if he will have the following areas in County Galway included: Ardrahan, Cahermore, Castletaylor, Skehanagh, Killeenavara, Clarinbridge, Stradbally, Oranmore, Ballyinacourty, Headford, Claretuam and the remaining parts of Annaghdown electoral divisions.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 227, 228, 230, 231, 232, 233, 234 and 235 together.

A review of the boundaries of the disadvantaged areas has already commenced. This review will include consideration of new areas which might be proposed to the EEC Commission for designation as disadvantaged, the manner in which the more severely or seriously handicapped areas are assessed, and what further parts of the disadvantaged areas might be classified as more severely handicapped. Submissions by local interested parties will, of course, be carefully considered in the course of the review.

This review will be carried out with all haste but, in view of the large amount of detailed work involved, the results are not expected for some time.

Questions Nos. 236 to 239, inclusive, postponed.
