Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Local Authority Finances.

345.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself with the present audit procedures for local authorities; the amount of (a) revenue and (b) capital expenditure by all local authorities for 1980 and 1981; and when this expenditure will be audited by the local government auditors.

I am satisfied as to the adequacy of the present audit procedures for local authorities which have operated satisfactorily over a long number of years. It is of course my intention that such procedures will be kept under review.

The estimated revenue expenditure of local authorities for 1981 and 1980 is £693 million and £557 million, respectively. The public capital programme provision for local authorities for 1981 and 1980 is £321.8 million and £226.3 million, respectively.

In so far as 1980 expenditure is concerned it is estimated at this stage that the audit of some 125 out of a total of 148 local authorities will be completed by 31 March 1982. It is hoped to have the audit of a further ten local authorities in progress at that date and to undertake the audit of the remaining 13 authorities during 1982.

It is premature at this stage, in advance of the end of the period to which the expenditure relates and of the preparation of the appropriate accounts, to make arrangements for the audit of 1981 expenditure.
