Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Re-stocking Grand Canal.

417.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will consider stocking the Grand Canal with coarse fish as this could be a source of environmental improvement in the Dublin region.

, Cavan-Monaghan): Over the past 20 years several efforts have been made by the former Inland Fisheries Trust to introduce coarse fish into the Grand Canal in the Dublin area. Due mainly to pollution, however, survival of the fish in the area was very poor.

In the circumstances, the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board, which is responsible for inland fisheries development in the area, considers that it would not be justified in the fisheries interest in undertaking a restocking programme as suggested by the Deputy. The board would, however, be prepared to consider proposals in the matter from any interested group of the community.
