Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Ballinamore/Ballyconnell Canal.

553.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the efforts made by his Department to have the Northern sector of the Ballinamore/Ballyconnell canal surveyed by the Northern authorities; and the date of the last contact between his Department and the Northern authorities.

Since approximately four-fifths of the length of the canal is in the Republic, it has been agreed with the Northern Ireland authorities that the Commissioners of Public Works will extend their survey to cover the remaining stretch.

The last formal discussions on the matter with the Northern Ireland authorities took place in 1977. When the study of the results of the survey has reached an appropriate stage, further discussions will be arranged.
