Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - Imports of Assembled Daihatsu Cars.

587.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will allow the import of assembled Daihatsu cars now that their assembly in Ireland has ceased.

In accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles (Registration of Importers) Act, 1968, the importation of fully built up motor vehicles is confined to registered importers. To qualify for registration as an importer of fully built-up Daihatsu motor cars, a firm would have to assemble these vehicles in Ireland at a rate of not less than 5 per cent of the total market for private cars and maintain that level of assembly. As no firm has qualified for registration as an importer of Daihatsu cars on this basis, the importation of such cars fully built up cannot be permitted under the 1968 Act.
