Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - School Sports Halls.

31.

asked the Minister for Education (a) if a site has been made available for the purpose of providing physical education facilities within the complex at Pobalscoil Neasáin, Baldoyle, Dublin 13; (b) if money has been allocated by his Department for this purpose; and (c) when it is proposed to commence building the facilities.

There is adequate ground available at Pobalscoil Neasáin, Baldoyle, Dublin for the provision of PE facilities.

The question of providing a PE hall at the school will be further considered in due course in the context of the available capital resources for school building purposes and the extent of the demands on such resources.

32.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the provision of a sports hall for Stranorlar post-primary school, County Donegal.

I assume that the Deputy's question refers to St. Columbas College, Stranorlar.

The position is that, as part of the extension currently under construction at St. Columba's, I have agreed to the expansion of the general purpose area and the addition of changing rooms and showers so as to provide a physical education facility for the school.

33.

asked the Minister for Education if he has approved a sports hall for the new community school at Clonakilty, County Cork.

34.

asked the Minister for Education if he will permit the building of a sports complex in the Castletownbere vocational school, County Cork.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will take questions Nos. 33 and 34 together. I assume the Deputy is referring to the community college at Clonakilty and the community school at Castletownbere.

Applications for financial assistance under my Department's Community, Youth, Recreational and Employment Programmes have been received in respect of the provision of recreational facilities at both of these centres.

The closing date for receipt of completed application forms was Monday 30 November 1981 and my Department is currently engaged in examining the applications received. Until all applications have been fully examined I will not be in a position to say which projects may qualify for grant-aid.

35.

asked the Minister for Education if he will sanction a grant for Carrigaline sports complex, County Cork which was being arranged by his predecessor as an addition to the new community school.

My intention is to address the provision of sports halls in a systematic way under arrangements which would ensure the participation of local interests — local authorities and local communities — as well as the Department. Any such halls would be provided under joint financing to secure the needs of school and community.

I propose to encourage this co-operative effort in the provision of halls through support under the recently announced scheme of capital grants for the construction of recreational facilities.

An application to provide a hall for Carrigaline has been received under the scheme and the application will be considered in conjunction with the many other applications.

Questions Nos. 36 to 48, inclusive, postponed.
