Vol. 331 No. 12

Written Answers. - County Dublin Prison Plans.

118.

asked the Minister for Justice if the building of the prison proposed for Raheen, Clondalkin, County Dublin, will now be discontinued.

119.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give assurances that there is no change of policy on his part of providing new prison facilities at Wheatfield, Palmerstown, County Dublin.

With the permission of the Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 118 and 119 together.

The project is for the building of a place of detention for male juveniles and a woman's prison/cum place of detention for girls, both to share a common perimeter and service buildings. A contract for site preparation, service buildings and perimetering has been signed and work is in progress. Design work is well advanced on the two custodial complexes and a considerable amount has already been spent on design and related work and large further amounts are due to be paid for that work in 1982. While it is estimated that the position will be reached by the first half of 1982 when tenders for the building of the complexes could be issued, it is not proposed to go to tender in 1982.

I am not in a position to give any assurances one way or the other as to what further decisions may be taken in the matter.
